OSTCHEM Supported Ukrainian Students at the 47th International Mendeleev Chemistry Olympiad

OSTCHEM Company being part of Dmitry Firtash’s Group DF has become a General Sponsor of Ukraine’s High School Olympic Team participating in the 47th International Chemistry Olympiad.

Eight Ukrainian schoolchildren represented Ukraine at the international competitions which took place on the 29 and 30 of April in Tashkent (Uzbekistan). The list of participants from Ukraine was based on results of the Ukrainian School Chemistry Olympiad held in March 2013 in Rivne. The competition attracted over 200 students from 26 regions of Ukraine.

This year the right to represent Ukraine at the international competition received the representatives of the four cities: Lviv (Andrey Stelmach, Oleg Gordiychuk, Vladislav Neshta), Kharkov (Alexander Vygivsky), Vinnitsa (Alexander Lyashuk) and Kiev (Maria Anapolskaya, Roman Didenko, Khristophor Khokhlov).

The Holding covered not only all the organizational and logistical expenses of the team, but also completely took over technical support – the purchase of chemicals and chemical equipment for special laboratory.

“Support to School Chemical Education’ project was initiated by Mr. Dmitry Firtash, the founder of Group DF. This year for the first time we support our team at the Mendeleev Olympiad which is the most prestigious tournament for high-school students. Educational programs are the Group’s priority in the strategic approach to the social responsibility”, – commented Boris Krasnyansky, Chief Executive Officer of Group DF.

The curator of the International Olympic chemistry team of Ukraine Yuriy Kholin expressed gratitude to OSTCHEM for years of chemical education support: “Thanks to the sponsors’ support  the Ukrainian team not only attended the Olympiad, but also had the opportunity to prepare for the competition on modern chemical equipment”, – said Vice-President of Kharkiv National V.N. Karazin University.

In pursuit of chemical education quality improvement and its popularization, Dmitry Firtash’s Group DF has been providing support to most gifted students and teachers featuring outstanding results in chemistry learning and teaching. The Group provides sponsorship support to 10 and 11-graders winning prizes at Ukrainian and international chemistry Olympiads. In addition to presenting valuable awards and prizes to them, Group DF finances extra-curriculum learning programs and courses for the young hopefuls. For example, last year Group DF’s enterprises financed English learning program for winners of the Olympiad in Washington (USA).

“Proper preparation for a competition is crucial for young talented Olympians. Without the latest equipment and reagents provided by the sponsor it would be difficult to compete. Before we learned on equipment manufactured back at the USSR times. Fortunately, we achieve maximum accuracy during chemical experiments: this allows us to properly prepare for the Olympiad, and increases the chances of winning”, – said Yuriy Kholin.

This year, OSTCHEM presented tablet PCs to Ukrainian Olympiad winners. In addition, four of the eight students who will show the best result at the Mendeleev Olympiad will go to the International Chemistry Olympiad, which will be held in 2013 in Moscow and bring together participants from 80 countries.

NOTE

The International Chemistry Olympiad is an academic competition for high-school student regularly run since 1968. Each year over 300 students from more than 70 countries take part in the Olympiad. A national team consists of four members.

Last year, the Ukrainian team participating in the 43rd International Olympiad in Turkey won the maximum number of medals: 4 out of 4. All in all, a record of the Ukrainian team having participated in 18 international Olympiads since 1994 includes 10 gold, 30 silver and 30 bronze medals.
